Are you a materials subject matter expert?
Join a confidential, long-established engineering manufacturer as a Metallurgist to lead materials engineering across manufactured and purchased components. This role owns material selection, welding, coatings, heat treatment, corrosion prevention, and failure analysis, acting as the Materials Subject Matter Expert for critical pump and valve products used in demanding industrial, marine, and defense environments.
Location: Massachusetts, USA (on-site)
Travel: Up to 10% (domestic + international)
Reference: MET-MA-001 (edit as needed)
DAY-TO-DAY OF THE ROLE
- Act as Materials SME for pump and valve products, including military applications
- Provide technical leadership across materials engineering initiatives and multi-site stakeholders
- Lead material selection, qualification, and validation for new and existing products
- Evaluate and implement emerging material technologies to support innovation and growth
- Develop and execute materials technology projects from concept through implementation
- Identify and mitigate technical and cost risk related to material recommendations and substitutions
- Support welding, casting, machining, heat treatment, and coating processes
- Drive failure analysis and root cause investigations
- Build partnerships with universities, research institutions, consultants, and industry experts
- Contribute to long-term materials strategy and capability development
- Collaborate closely with Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, and Product teams to deliver projects on time and within budget
SKILLS YOU NEED
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or related engineering discipline (advanced degree preferred)
- 5+ years’ experience leading complex materials or materials technology projects
- Strong background in welding, castings, heat treatment, and corrosion prevention
- Experience with manufacturing and machining processes
- Strong written and verbal communication; confident presenting to senior leadership
- Proven ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and drive change
- Data-driven mindset; comfortable in metric-driven environments
- Familiarity with lean principles or business operating systems is a plus
- Valid passport and willingness to travel up to 10%
Preferred (nice to have)
- Experience within a global manufacturing organization
- Knowledge of fluid handling equipment (pumps, compressors, valves, controls)
- Familiarity with military specifications, certifications, and audits
- Background in metal-product manufacturing environments
